Kilinoe is the first Hawaiian green tea to be sold in the mainland USA. A mild but surprisingly complex tea, this little offering from Hawaii exhibits qualities of citrus fruit met by leafy green vegetables. The tea has a floral perfume and a subtly sweet flavour, but it is predominantly savoury in character. At $9 a sample, it’s not the cheapest tea on the block, but for anyone interested in trying Hawaii’s teas, it’s a good place to start.

What a tea. While not particularly aromatic, this bai hao oolong from Life in Teacup is exquisite in the mouth, coating the palate with its honeyed sweetness.

This is the best bai hao oolong I’ve ever had. The dry leaves are an attractive mix of white tips and leaves of various shades of brown which, once infused, uncurl slowly, giving the drinker many infusions from the same batch of leaves. The flavour and aroma are both sweet; a hint of tropical fruit combined with peach-like tartiness and a lively character. The tea finishes with a long, smooth sweetness.

This tea was originally reviewed on the blog: Bai Hao Oolong “Oriental Beauty”, Superior Grade from Life in Teacup.

A surprisingly cheap travel mug with one killer feature: a twist-to-stop steeping device that lets you control how long you steep your tea.

Copco’s Stainless Steel Tea Thermal is a pretty good travel mug, especially considering its price. Nicely insulated with stainless steel – which doesn’t get hot – and rounded with a silicone grip for easy handling, the mug is simple to use and easy to clean. Its finest feature is the twist-to-stop steeping device, which will let you control just how long you want your tea to steep. A very nice touch, and one which wins a lot of points in my book.

The main drawback with this tea thermal is the size of its infuser — it’s tiny. You won’t be able to use this mug for any teas that require significant space to expand, such as oolongs or pu-erhs. Stick with black teas and small-leaf green teas.

“Toyo Mukashi”, Uji Matcha from O-Cha is to me the perfect tea to begin the day. I prefer savoury green teas to sweet ones, which is why I love this particular matcha.

Toyo Mukashi has an enlivening, bold character and is the colour of a deep, lusciously vibrant forest green. It froths up beautifully and resounds with an aroma of steamed vegetables — think leafy green vegetables with a hint of chicken stock. However, there is also the subtle note of nectarines in the nose, giving it a slightly fruity, sweeter aroma. It tastes of spinach, with a slight bitterness.

It’s taken me many attempts to write this review as I keep finishing the tea before I’ve written anything. Let’s just say, I’m always very disappointed to see the bottom of the matcha bowl.

A robust, full-bodied black tea from the hills of Ceylon. In 2009, it won first prize in the Ceylon category at the World Tea Expo.

Teas Etc’s Ceylon OP1 was a first-prize winner in the 2009 World Tea Expo’s Ceylon category, and deservedly so. While it is similar to other Ceylon black teas I have had, it has subtle marks of quality that set it apart from the rest. The aroma is crisp, earthy and peppery; the liquor is a vivid colour of rusty orange; and the tea itself is full-bodied, with a robust, balanced character.

Teas Etc’s Shui Xian is a wonderfully aromatic tea with a strong note of stonefruit cupped by a smokiness that lends the tea a smooth, well-balanced feel. Shui Xian is a semi-oxidized tea, and in terms of oolongs it sits at about the halfway point — it’s more rounded and full-bodied than the lighter green oolongs, but it’s not quite as strong as darker oolongs like Da Hong Pao or Formosa Oolong.

I find it hard to do this tea justice. Bana Tea Company’s Denong Wild Brick Pu-erh is a complex tea with a smooth, almost delicate body.

Take a sip and hold the tea in your mouth: the tea changes, moving slowly from a sweet, almond-like nuttiness to a mild tarty flavour. It cools and refreshes the mouth, something which great pu-erh teas can do. As with other pu-erhs, Denong Wild Brick is to be re-infused repeatedly, gradually increasing the steeping time on each occasion. Its flavour profile changes with each steeping as well, becoming more tarty and less delicate, while the earthy, campfire qualities that so characterize ripe pu-erh are more apparent. A wonderful tea, and one to savour over the length of an afternoon.

From O-Cha comes this fine sencha with an aroma that reminds me of blackcurrant and a forest floor. A revitalizing, vegetal brew.

This is based on my tastings of the 2009 version of O-Cha’s Yutaka Midori.

This shincha leaps out at you with its unmistakable freshness and blackcurrant-dominated aroma. The smell of the rich dark green leaves reminds me of a forest floor, bearing a slight hint of pine. The brew looks like a green miso soup, with the leaves’ powder swirling around. It tastes of steamed vegetables, and would make a nice accompaniment to sushi or fish.

As with other shinchas, you need to take care to not overbrew it — shinchas can easily become too astringent if you let the leaves steep for too long.

I originally review this on my blog: Kagoshima Shincha Yutaka Midori (2009)

A wonderfully aromatic hojicha from Mighty Leaf Tea with a nice mixture of leaves and stalk and a savoury character that is perfect for accompanying meals.

Mighty Leaf Tea’s Organic Hojicha is a mixture of stalks and leaves, roasted to give them a dark bronze colour and a rich aroma of berries and chocolate. The liquor, by contrast, is a greenish yellow. Those berry flavours are still there, but the tea has a more savoury, grassy flavour than the aroma would have suggested. To be honest, after the rich aromas of the dry leaf, it’s hard not to be a little disappointed in how the tea tastes: this one certainly smells better than it tastes. But it still makes a great every-day kind of tea, and would go down well with a meal.

I originally reviewed this tea on my blog: Organic Hojicha from Mighty Leaf Tea.
