"Unfortunately, the tea used in most supermarket blends of Earl Grey tea is of abysmal quality." Agreed. I never knew there were so many different varieties of Earl Grey though! I must get sampling.

A co-worker loves Earl Grey tea, unfortunately for me. I get a headache just from having her walk by with a cup of it.

I think vanilla can go well in Earl Grey - although I've only tried this combination by adding vanilla extract to brewed Earl Grey to make a London Fog type drink (there's a post on my blog about this) - but I think that vanilla flavouring in teas and indeed in most things comes with the same caveats that the bergamot flavouring comes with, so it's something to be picky about for sure. I confess to quite liking Twinings Earl Grey, largely because I find too much bergamot gives me a headache, and the Twinings one is mild. I would really like to try the Lupicia one though, when I've finished my current lot of Earl Grey...

Vanilla with earl grey? Eww. Sounds terrible! Lavender I can understand. But vanilla... it just sounds like the kind of combination folks in the marketing department come up with.

I want a really good base tea witha solid bergamot flavor, but there must be a balance. I have one now that I have open on the counter in hopes some of the bergamot will go away or it becomes mulch. I also love it well balanced with lavender, although I generally find I need to make that a tad weak. I really dislike the cream ones or the ones made with vanilla. To my mind, the flavors don't go together well.
