My personal favourite black teas are Yunnan Golden Tips and Black Needle. I do not fancy the 'smoky' aroma of Lapsang Souchong etc.

I enjoy black tea mostly after meals as it supports digestion (often substitute it for dark oolongs) by warming up the stomach.

P.S.According to Chinese medicine only black tea and puerh are warming for the stomach. Oolong and white tea are neutral. Green tea is negative and therefore cannot be consumed in excessive quantities.

Nice write-up. I just had Russian Caravan for the first time yesterday, was good since I'm a fan of Lapsang Souchong, though my department says it smells like I have a camp fire at my desk. They don't know what they're missing.
